Congratulations to everyone who attended today's Financial Town Meeting to support the Budget Committee's responsible budget recommendation. Both the school and municipal budgets were overwhelmingly approved, despite the expected TCC-led efforts to cut school funding. And the shortsighted proposal to take money from the General Fund was soundly defeated.
Defending our community and schools against those driven by short-term self-interest is an ongoing process. But as with David Nelson's ill-fated attempt to pass a "tax cap" ordinance that capped no tax but would take away the rights of Tiverton voters, people getting involved really can make a difference. And despite all the misinformation and conspiracy-theories that get put out there, facts and logic do matter.
Today's pro-Tiverton result is exactly why CURB was started, to advocate for a responsible budget that supports our community & school services while containing costs and tax-increases. The blog, the email updates, and Facebook page are intended to present accurate information and reasoned opinion about what's best for all who live in Tiverton. Preserving Tiverton is a year-round process, and CURB will continue to provide information and discussion of important issues. It's also a vehicle for discussion and sharing your views. Please feel free to email your thoughts for the blog, or comment on Facebook. There's nothing more crucial to the success of democracy than an informed and involved community. And it's heartening when people of various backgrounds and views stand together to do the right thing.
